Canoe Portage Yoke/Seat Combination

It's a portaging yoke with padded cloth shoulder rests.  Turn it over, and it's a canoe seat with padded cloth bottom.  Can take the place of the middle thwart on your canoe - it's that strong.   (In that case, you would add screws to lock the width adjustment).

As a yoke, it puts the weight of your canoe on your shoulders, while positioning the canoe high enough above your head so your head won't bump the floor above and you can see where you are walking.

As a seat, it provides padded comfort and a low center of gravity.

Two views of the Yoke Seat:  Above left, it's in Yoke mode, transferring the weight of the canoe to her shoulders, and keeping the canoe high enough so her head doesn't hit the floor above. Above right, the yoke seat is turned over and installed in seat mode, giving him a large, comfortable seating surface below gunwale height, so a stable, low center of gravity.

  Buy Now

email Jim@sailboatsToGo.com after ordering and tell him you want red, blue or brown fabric on your yoke seat.

Installation:  Screw clips to canoe gunwale at desired seat/yoke location.  Seat pops in and out of clips by means of spring buttons in seat frame.   If planning to use the yoke function, seat should be centered, fore and aft, on canoe.   If you have to remove and existing center thwart to install seat, lock seat's width adjustment by installing screws through telescoping tubing members.

Features:

  • the pads, NOT your shoulder, absorb the shock
  • the wide pads distribute the load over your entire shoulder
  • just spread the pads to fit your shoulders
  • you move within the pads for perfect canoe balance
  • your hands have a natural hold to control the canoe
  • better visibility (and your head is out of the mosquitoes)

We are taking a trip into the BWCA over Memorial day Weekend. We are going way in and our plan is to go as light as possible so we can single portage everything. With that said we are thinking of taking a minimum number of canoes. Last year my buddies fished 3 out of a canoe the whole trip without any issues with the middle guy sitting on the bottem of the canoe.

This year we have added a couple spring creek yokes that convert into a middle seat. My question is this. Have any of you used these type of seats, and how have they worked out in the past for fishing/paddling with 3 in a canoe?

Thanks for the input..

They work great, I have used them for many years. You may want a foam boat cusion to put on top depending on the height of the paddler because you sit a little lower than a standard canoe seat.

The only drawback to fishing 3 in a canoe is "middle seat syndrome" has been known to happen from time to time. wink

Did you find that it was a lot more tippy with the person up higher in the middle? The fact that we will have gear in the canoe as well as 3 guys, the issue of weight distribution comes to mind.

No, with a cushion the person in the middle is approximately at the same level as the other two.

Weight distribution with 3 guys is more important. I usually put the biggest guy in back, #2 in front and lightest in the middle. Then arrange your packs to keep things balanced.

I have one that I made. I use it with an oar rig and for portaging. Just remember to flip it around so your center of gravity is lowered.

We did a trial run last night and it worked really slick. We tried it with a cushion and without. It seemed that with the cushion it was a little more unbalanced. We had one of our packs filled with about 80lbs of stuff in order to make it feel real. Sitting an extra 2 inches lower seemed to balance us out a little better. I may have just been in our minds though. Thanks for the input guys.

The yolk-seat works great and been using one for 15 years and no problem. The question is the capacity of the canoe you our using is what will make the difference.

Weight capacity of a 17 ft standard canoe is around 750lbs.
3 guys and gear will be a barge to move through the water.
Just an FYI, a solo guy with his pack in the bow could paddle circles around you.

The three guys in our canoe will be around 550 lbs combined. Figure on gear being another 150 lbs max.(#4 Duluth pack and 3 personal backpacks) We should be sitting pretty decent. We will be having one canoe with two guys that can carry the heavier duluth packs. Thanks for the info Surface.

We had one guy running solo last year and the big winds were tossing him around everywhere. We told ourselves that we would rather go three in a canoe instead of having one guy fly solo. If we are a little slower than the others, it isn't the end of the world. We did have all three of us paddling the other night and it seemed that we could go along ant a pretty good clip.

Most people bring a spare paddle when on canoe trips. No reason you can't put it in the hands of the guy sitting in the middle. I've recently gotten into using kayak paddles on my trips. Makes a world of difference.

So what do you do when the only boat u have with has problems? Who is going to help u if u tip over? Not a very safe idea in my opinion. Two boats as a minimum at all times for me. ST is exactly right a solo boat would easily paddle circles around you especially with a kayak paddle. No getting blown around in a solo boat with a kayak paddle, try it once.

We did tons of 3-to a canoe trips in my youth...no problem. I guess tipping in a canoe is always a possibility, but not enough so that I would have skipped literally hundreds of time we were the only boat. 1,2 or 3 people, you still need to learn proper loading and balence to use a canoe. A solo boat is great, but a full size canoe with one guy is certainly tougher in high winds, even if weighed down. We did some of the 3 guys/2 boat trips as well, and they went fine, as long as we had 1 good solo paddler (me).

Never had a problem with 3 in my 16' mad river explorer. I also have the middle yoke seat and it works great. Been doing it for over 25 years without an incident.
